LyraChem was formed in 2004 as a spin-out from Durham University's chemistry department.

Originally established to commercialise novel organocatalysts, a strong collaboration with Newcastle University's School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials led to development of an innovative service-based business model. In 2008, thanks to this innovative business model, promising early sales and dedicated team, LyraChem secured significant financial backing from private and venture capital sources, enabling it to expand and move to new premises in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Through close interaction with the departments of chemistry and chemical engineering at the universities of Durham and Newcastle, LyraChem also provides industry with a window into breakthrough technologies and new ways of working.
